Quassia amara, la Quinine de Cayenne, est une plante tropicale de la famille des Simaroubaceae. En Guyane, la plante porte le nom vernaculaire de Couachi. Ses propriétés antipaludéennes ont été mises en évidence dès le XVIIIe siècle au Suriname par Graman Quassi, qui donna son nom à la plante, un ancien esclave affranchi devenu tradipraticien reconnu , son bois est di amer ( jusqu’à ‘a 50 fois plus que la quininine ) qu’ il est utilisé pour éloigner insectes et parasites.

Quassia amara, also known as Cayenne quassia, is a tropical plant belonging to the Simaroubaceae family. In French Guiana, the plant is commonly known as Couachi.
Its antimalarial properties were documented as early as the 18th century in Suriname by Graman Quassi, after whom the plant was named. He was a formerly enslaved man who later became a respected traditional practitioner.
Its wood is extremely bitter, up to 50 times more bitter than quinine, which is why it is used to repel insects and parasites.
